PAST EVENT: Masterclass Anatomy and Écorché

  • Figura | Dutch Academy of Figurative Sculpture 10 Hendrik van Wijnstraat Amsterdam, NH, 1065 AS Netherlands (map)

Instructor: Sergio Tomasa Carrasco

Location: Hendrik van Wijnstraat 10, 1065 AS Amsterdam

Artists use the term écorché  (“skinned”) to describe a sculpted figure whose muscles are stripped of skin and whose muscle layers are partly shown down to the bone. The écorché often serves as a reference figure for assignments, or as an exercise for students who follow a classical figurative art education.

About the Course

The purpose of this course is for students to understand how the skeleton’s structure determines a pose, and to get a better idea of what is happening below the surface of the skin. This course consists of three masterclasses and a series of anatomy lectures preceding each masterclass.

The lessons will be given by Sergio Tomasa Carrasco, instructor at Figura.

The lessons take place in the studios of Figura (Amsterdam West). After the workshop you will receive your model, the lesson sheets  and your armature to bring home. This way you can continue your studies in your own work environment.

Prior to the course you are welcome to join a free anatomy lecture (on location, Monday 4:00 - 5:30). Books to purchase: Paul Richer, artistic anatomy (recommended) Elliot Goldfinger, human anatomy for artists (obligatory).

What we will do in the course:

We will begin by looking at material developed in the time of the classical academy and our current references (books and apps). We will then systematically review the various parts of the human body through anatomical drawings and memory shapes, highlighting the importance of proportions and gesture of the skeleton and handing tools to recognize landmarks.

MASTERCLASS 1 | SKELETON 18 - 22 November 2023

1. Proportions and gesture of the skeleton.
2. Blocking in bones and structure, focusing on the major masses.
3. Learning how to recognize landmarks and what makes them landmarks.
4. Going into the skeleton.

MASTERCLASS 2 | CORE MUSCLES, SHOULDER GIRDLE, NECK, HEAD 9 - 13 March 2024

5. Working from the center out through the extremities with focus on construction and rhythms.
6. Develop and understand the overlaps of the larger muscles groups.

MASTERCLASS 3 | UPPER AND LOWER ARM AND LEG, HAND AND FOOT 1 - 5 June 2024

7. Consider the connections between muscle, tendon and bone.
8. Develop the understanding of volume and overlaps.
