PAST EVENT: Workshop Animal Sculpture with Renée Marcus Janssen

Instructor: Renée Marcus Janssen
Dates: 18 - 22 October 2023
Cost: 750 euro
Location: Hendrik van Wijnstraat 10, 1065 AS Amsterdam

In this workshop we work towards creating a realistic animal sculpture, paying attention to composition, shape, line and structure. The aim of the course is to introduce students to techniques that result in convincing representations of animal figures in clay.

Program

At the start of the course Renée will give a presentation about her own work and the inspiration behind it and she will demonstrate how she came to her own visual language. Students present their photo reference. During the course we will explore gesture and proportion in small maquettes and then move on to the actual scale. On the last day students are given the opportunity to hollow out their sculpture under supervision. A hollowed-out sculpture, once dried, can be fired after a month or two.

Subject choice is free. Good visual material essential. We aim for compact sculptures or portraits because they are easier to hollow out. Max. height is 30 cm. Firing is the simplest, fastest and cheapest way to make your work more sustainable. The clay with which we work is the material Renée also uses to make her sculptures: 0.2 chamotte, firing red.

Dates & Time table

Wednesday 18th October - Sunday 22nd October 2023
Wednesday 14:00 - 17:00; Thursday - Saturday 10:00 - 17:00; Sunday 10:00 - 13:00

Instructor

Renée Marcus Janssen studied sculpture in Italy and in the Netherlands. While at the Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara, she learned the craftmanship of finishing bronze at the Fonderia artistica Da Prato in Pietrasanta. Back in Amsterdam, working in a fixed studio setting allowed her to further enhance details and refine her personal sculpting style, achieving a highly individual modelling style, based on ancient and traditional Italian sculpting techniques. Her studio is located at the former Amsterdam NDSM shipyard, an enormous cultural hotspot with a vibrant artist community.

Practical information

A home assignment precedes the course. We ask students to collect good (high-quality) photo material that can be used as reference. Teachers help students select their final design and make an armature. This workshop is open to beginning, intermediate and advanced students. What you need to bring to the studio: high resolution photo material of your animal from multiple view points (printed on photo paper), apron, notebook.
