  • Figura - Dutch Academy of Figurative Sculpture
Hendrik van Wijnstraat 101065 AS, AmsterdamNetherlands (map)

Description

The purpose of this course is for students to understand how to work freely with the human figure in the pursuit of their own vision. To get a better idea of what is happening below the surface of the skin as we design a figure with intent.

During the workshop students will be sculpting and drawing the figure of their own design. Throughout the course we will explore the designs and learn how to form them to the needs of our composition.

We will be switching our mindset to learn more about the benefits of looking at our work through drawing and sculpture during the preparatory process of a composition. It will be a workshop that follows the process of the great masters.

✓ You will be using the fundamental knowledge of the human anatomy to give your sculptures and drawings life.
✓ You will focus mostly on construction and how to internalize all the information you are learning.
✓ You will start with the larger masses of muscles and bones. Always moving from simple to complex, and from big to small.
✓ You will be learning simple tools that can be applied into both drawing and sculpture.
✓ This is meant to be a guide to the process of how to work with the human figure in your composition. You will learn how to journey it by memory and design so that it can be brought out whenever you need it, all to increase your understanding of the potential in your compositions.

Program

We will begin by looking at a number of figurative and anatomical works, both in drawing and sculpture: by artists such as Michelangelo, Rubens, Rodin and many more. We will then discuss and go through different methods of how to bring a figure to life.

We will be going through and focus on terms such as:

1. Proportions and gesture of the skeleton.
2. Blocking in bones and structure, focusing on the major masses.
3. Learning how to recognize landmarks and what makes them landmarks.
4. Understanding the many rhythms and harmonies of the body.

During the workshop you will be working on five small clay maquettes that you bring home with you at the end of the course.

Instructor

The lessons will be given by draughtsman and former director of the anatomy program at the Florence Academy of Art, Per Elof Nilsson Ricklund. Per Elof (Örnsköldsvik, Sweden) has taught at The Florence Academy of Art for more than a decade and has recently returned to his hometown in northern Sweden: www.penricklund.com.

Practical information

This workshop is open to intermediate and advanced students in both painting and sculpture. The lessons are partly supported by the use of anatomy books and applied master studies. After the workshop you will be bringing your sculptures home with you. This way you can continue your studies in your own environment. What you need to bring to the studio: lunch, apron, A4 sized sketchbook and pencils.
